Stephen Curry Pushes Retirement Further Away: Good News for the Warriors

When talking about Stephen Curry, the mind immediately goes to one of the most influential figures in NBA history. Four championships, two MVP awards, and twelve All-Star appearances already say a lot about the legacy he has built on the court.

Yet despite a trophy case full of accolades and his 17th NBA season already underway, the Golden State Warriors superstar does not seem ready to close the chapter on his playing career anytime soon.

During a conversation on The Athletic Show with Marcus Thompson II, Curry explained very clearly what will actually determine the moment he retires.

I think the first signal comes from the body. When I’m on the court I still get lost in the joy of it. It’s still my happy place. The competition, being with my teammates, chasing something meaningful… those things still motivate me. And I don’t see that feeling disappearing anytime soon

At 38 years old, Curry is naturally at a different stage of his career. His absolute peak years may be behind him, but his offensive production tells a very different story from that of a player nearing the end.

The health question: the “runner’s knee” setback

While his talent shows little sign of fading, some questions remain from a physical standpoint. Curry has been sidelined since January 30 due to a knee injury described as runner’s knee, and the persistent discomfort has made it harder to determine a clear recovery timeline.

The Warriors’ medical staff is carefully evaluating the situation. The main goal is to avoid any setbacks that could compromise the final stretch of the franchise leader’s career.

For that reason, the team may choose a cautious approach, potentially limiting his workload to preserve his condition in the long term.

Contract through 2027 and one last big goal

Despite the physical uncertainties, one thing seems clear: Stephen Curry has no intention of stopping just yet. His contract with Golden State runs for two more years and roughly $120 million, guaranteeing his presence at least until 2027.

The franchise continues to build around him with a clear objective: making one final push for an NBA championship before the end of his career.

To achieve that, Golden State could look to strengthen the roster by adding another star or an elite perimeter shooter, pieces that would allow the team to remain competitive against the league’s top contenders.

In the meantime, Curry remains focused on the present. As long as the court keeps giving him the same emotions that have defined his journey in the NBA, the idea of retirement will remain nothing more than a distant thought.
