The departure of Gregg Popovich and the further development of Victor Wembanyama set the stage for the most important season the San Antonio Spurs have had since their last title. Indeed, this year must bring answers about the real potential of this team, and above all resolve key issues to become competitive again, starting with the overcrowding in the guards positions.

At the end of the article, you can consult all the guides to the 30 NBA teams by accessing the Guide Index.

Key Players

At only 21 years old, Victor Wembanyama (F, 21 cr) already has the NBA world at his feet. Beyond his physical frame and unprecedented talent, the 2004-born player is exhibiting a maturity rare even among his peers. The serious injury seems to be a distant memory, and some already see him as a credible MVP candidate, so we can’t help but recommend him.

The man tasked with helping Wembanyama reach high levels is De’Aaron Fox (G, 12.5 cr), who was let go too easily by the Kings and is now hunting for affirmation atop the NBA. His impact in Texas has not been ideal, partly due to a team without ambitions and some physical issues, but partnering with the French – always capable of spacing – could be ideal for a playmaker who loves attacking in the midrange, so we expect great things from Fox.

Possible Surprises

The rookie season of Stephon Castle (G, 9.0 cr) surprised many with how quickly he adapted to the league. Despite a slow start (due to below-par perimeter shooting), Castle learned to handle difficult nights by leaning on his robust physicality – far above many peers – to attack the rim decisively, becoming one of the league’s most efficient finishers by percentile.

The biggest surprise of the preseason is David Jones Garcia, a 23-year-old Dominican who went undrafted, but is showcasing in the NBA what he demonstrated in the G-League. Averaging 24.5 points in youth league play isn’t the standard he’ll need to match in the NBA, but he’s capable of flashes off the bench.

Players to Avoid

The rise of Castle and the presence of Harper and Fox seem to have definitively curtailed Devin Vassell’s (G, 9.0 cr) future in a Spurs uniform. His defensive gaps and limited playmaking vision don’t yet make him a top-tier league player, and he will have less space than expected, so avoid him.

Likely Starting Lineup

PG: De’Aaron Fox (Guard, 12.5 Credits)

SG: Stephon Castle (Guard, 9.0 Credits)

SF: Keldon Johnson (Forward, 7.0 Credits)

PF: Harrison Barnes (Forward, 6.5 Credits)

C: Victor Wembanyama (Forward, 19.5 Credits)

Power Ranking

As mentioned, this season is crucial for clarifying which players should belong to the Spurs future core. However, another pure transitional season won’t be sufficient: for this group’s growth, it’s essential to start testing these young players in more demanding scenarios, perhaps in the Play-In tournament, to acquire experience that will be hugely useful in 1–2 years, when they’ll be ready to fight for a championship.
