Ja Morant has suffered a new injury. The Memphis Grizzlies star sustained a sprain to his left ankle during Sunday’s practice and will be assessed week by week.

The Tennessee franchise announced the news through a spokesperson, while coach Tuomas Iisalo reassured that the injury does not appear serious, though he urged caution.

Fortunately, we are only in preseason, and we expect to have him back soon

Morant’s issue adds to an already complicated situation for Memphis, which currently has two other starters sidelined. Zach Edey underwent surgery on his left ankle in June, with a return expected between mid and late November. Jaren Jackson Jr., on the other hand, had surgery for a foot injury in July; his estimated recovery time of four to six weeks casts doubt on his availability for the season opener on October 22 against the New Orleans Pelicans.

In the past two years, Ja Morant has played just 59 games due to a series of physical issues and a 25-game suspension at the start of last season. After returning, Morant played only nine games before suffering a glenoid labrum tear in his shoulder, which prematurely ended his season.

For Memphis, aiming to return to the NBA playoffs after a disappointing year, the priority now is to fully recover their stars without taking unnecessary risks.
