Los Angeles Clippers: The Last Run for Tyronn Lue’s Veterans

An aging roster, plenty of talent, and a defense still under construction: Tyronn Lue’s Clippers are searching for the right balance to stay competitive in the West

Despite an ongoing investigation that could lead to sanctions against the Clippers and their owner Steve Ballmer – accused of circumventing the Salary Cap by using a company he funds to pay a large sponsorship sum – the team has shown promising signs on the court in preseason, especially considering the offseason changes.

For those who may have lost track, through trades and free agency the Clippers have added:

  • The scorer Bradley Beal, cut by the Suns and potentially the second/third offensive option behind Leonard
  • The veteran Chris Paul, to give James Harden some rest as a playmaker
  • The dynamic power forward – with shooting range – John Collins acquired from Utah
  • The center Brook Lopez who offers alternatives to what the great Zubac provides

Aside from a test against China’s Guangzhou Loong Lions – hardly a real challenge, even with ex-NBA players Victor Oladipo and Frank Kaminsky on the roster – some key themes have emerged in coach Lue’s early setup.

Defensive Balance

The Clippers have the tools to be aggressive on defense, with experts like Kris Dunn, a wily old fox like Batum, and a proven rim protector in Brook Lopez. They can also inject versatility and athleticism through Jones Jr. and Collins. The key will be finding a balance, make the most of these assets, and coach Lue should be able to make proper in-game adjustments. A thing that is one of his main qualities.

Experience and Pace Management

With an average age of 33.2, this Clippers roster is the oldest ever to start an NBA season. With Harden or Paul orchestrating the offense, Lue will likely need to slow the pace down. Also because Zubac and Lopez are strong rim protectors when the defense is set. To do this will be crucial winning the defensive rebounding battle and limiting turnovers on offense. Where Leonard and Beal can go iso, while Harden and Paul run pick-and-rolls.

Spacing and the Second Unit

With Forwards capable of hitting from deep and two ball handlers who can pull up from range – making it risky for defenders to go under screens – the Clippers will need to maintain proper floor spacing to maximize Leonard’s isolation game. Beal is potentially a great floor spacer, but in second-unit minutes, Bogdanovic’s shooting threat will be even more important, especially to offset the offensive limitations of Dunn, who’s elite defensively but can be left open on the perimeter.

While the investigation into the sponsorship deal continues, the Clippers appear ready to make a real push in a Western Conference that looks more open than expected. Not short on talent and experience, everything will depend on coach Tyronn Lue’s ability to manage minutes, pace, and defensive cohesion.

If the veterans can stay healthy and engaged, the Los Angeles Clippers could legitimately contend for a standout season, both on the court and beyond the media buzz.
