Jalen Brunson and the Dark Side of Social Media: “I’ve Received Death Threats”

The Knicks leader opened up about online hate and how he manages to turn it into strength thanks to his family

In recent days, Jalen Brunson has addressed an issue that goes far beyond basketball: the death threats many athletes receive on social media. The New York Knicks point guard spoke candidly about the weight words can carry and how, too often, the line between sports criticism and verbal violence gets crossed.

In an interview shared by Sports Illustrated, Brunson explained that these aren’t isolated incidents.

I’ve received death threats. It’s happened more than once. People have said some really heavy things… I wouldn’t wish it on anyone

It’s not just heated comments after a loss, but direct and ongoing messages that cut straight to the point.

The topic resurfaced after New York Giants kicker Graham Gano revealed he regularly receives hateful messages linked to game results – and, in some cases, from fans angry over lost bets.

It’s a toxic environment that, as Brunson pointed out, is hard to comprehend:

I wouldn’t wish for anyone to read those kinds of things. I don’t understand why someone thinks it’s okay to send messages filled with that much hate

The former Mavs guard also stressed how challenging it is to cope with these attacks:

I try not to show too much because I know people out there don’t care about your problems. But when I have my family by my side, I can be vulnerable. I have a tight circle I rely on whenever I have doubts or feel under pressure

The support of his parents – both of whom had a strong influence on his upbringing – has been crucial in helping him stay balanced and focused.

The way I was raised taught me how to turn all of this into something positive. I owe that to my parents

On the court, Brunson keeps answering in the best possible way: through performance. In the Knicks’ recent 137–114 win over Minnesota, he finished with 23 points, 10 assists, and 7 rebounds, helping the team stay undefeated at home (5–3 overall).

Still, his message remains clear: behind every athlete is a person, and words always leave a mark. Jalen Brunson isn’t asking for pity – just respect. The kind every player, at any level, deserves.
