Joel Embiid returns to practice, but doubts about his future remain

Joel Embiid might finally be back on the court against the Orlando Magic, yet his situation is still wrapped in uncertainty

The question floating around Philadelphia for days is simple: Will Joel Embiid actually play tonight against the Orlando Magic? After two weeks on the sidelines, the 76ers’ center finally completed a full practice on Monday, a sign that reignited fans’ hopes.

Embiid practiced with the team, and the medical staff labeled him as “questionable”, a small but meaningful upgrade compared to the recent “out” or “doubtful”.

A complicated start to the season

Embiid has played only six games so far, averaging 19.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.3 assists. Numbers below his usual standards, yet still accompanied by consistent scoring: after just four points in the season opener, he topped 20 in each of the following five games.

The problem? The same as always. His availability is unpredictable. While it’s well known that his left knee has been a chronic issue for years, this time it’s the right one that gave out due to overcompensation. That’s why he has missed the last seven games.

An internal team member – according to some reports – admitted:

With Embiid, you have to live with uncertainty, because no week is ever the same as the previous one

It’s not an offhand comment: it’s practically a manifesto of what the Sixers have been dealing with for a long time.

The trade idea splits fans and analysts

There’s one point analysts agree on: if Embiid can’t stay healthy, Philadelphia can’t aim high. Yet the discussion flips immediately: even if the team wanted to take a different path, how could the franchise realistically move?

Many fans are starting to wonder if it’s time for a trade, frustrated by seasons marked by constant absences. But we’re looking at a dead end.

Embiid is over 30, carries a medical history that scares off any suitor, and, most importantly, has a $188.2 million contract extension for the next three years, which doesn’t even kick in until 2026–27. A massive figure in an NBA desperately trying to avoid penalties tied to the new tax apron.

A rival executive – according to some behind-the-scenes reports – called the idea of trading for Embiid “a financially senseless commitment for most teams”.

It may sound exaggerated, but it highlights a very real point: the market for the Sixers’ center is practically nonexistent.

A forced partnership

The truth is that Philadelphia is trapped. No one seems willing to take on such a contract, and Embiid’s health offers no guarantees. As a result, the team and player are almost forced to continue together, trying to find a difficult balance between physical management and competitiveness.

As for tonight, one last step remains: the pre-game evaluation. Only then will we know if Embiid is truly returning to the court. Another small chapter in a story that’s becoming harder and harder to decipher.
