Wembanyama Reaches 100 Straight Games With a Block: “He’s the Best”

Victor Wembanyama records a block in his 100th consecutive game, joining an exclusive NBA club reserved for only a few all-time legends

Victor Wembanyama continues to redefine the limits of NBA defense. In the San Antonio Spurs’ convincing win over the Atlanta Hawks (126-98), the French big man reached a milestone that already places him alongside true legends of the game: 100 consecutive regular-season games with at least one block.

The achievement is even more impressive when viewed within the context of a complete all-around performance. Against Atlanta, Wembanyama finished with 26 points, 12 assists, and 2 blocks, leading the Spurs on both ends of the floor. The signature block of the night came midway through the third quarter, when he violently pinned Dyson Daniels’ attempt against the backboard, before repeating the feat late in the game on a layup by rookie Asa Newell.

A streak that began as a rookie and never stopped

The last regular-season game in which Wembanyama failed to record a block dates back to January 10, 2024, against Detroit. From that point on, he has never stopped making his presence felt around the rim. It’s an extraordinarily rare level of defensive consistency, especially considering that the streak began during his rookie season.

Daniels, one of Wembanyama’s victims on the night, openly acknowledged the Spurs center’s impact:

He’s the best shot-blocker in the league. With that height and that length, he can affect shots in so many different ways. When you attack the paint, you always have to know where he is.

Dyson Daniels

Those words perfectly capture how Wembanyama’s mere presence alters opposing offensive decisions, even when he doesn’t come away with a block himself.

An exclusive club: only Ewing and Mutombo before him

Before Wembanyama, only Patrick Ewing (145 games) and Dikembe Mutombo (116) had ever reached 100 consecutive games with at least one block. It’s an extremely short list that underscores just how exceptional this achievement is.

Mutombo, second all-time in career blocks with 3,289, trails only Hakeem Olajuwon (3,830) in a statistic that has been officially tracked since the 1973-74 season. Those numbers help put into perspective just how special Wembanyama’s trajectory already is. This season alone, he has totaled 51 blocks, despite missing 12 games with a calf injury.
