Banchero delivers an All-Star performance: “I need to get back to having fun”
The Magic blow a 21-point lead against Toronto, but Banchero shines with a 23-point triple-double, adding 15 rebounds and 10 assists
Paolo Banchero gave the Magic what they had been waiting for over the past few weeks: a complete, dominant, and consistent performance. It wasn’t enough to secure a win, but it restored a clear on-court focal point for Orlando.
In the 107-106 loss to Toronto – decided by his missed three-pointer at the buzzer – Banchero posted 23 points, 15 rebounds, and 10 assists, recording his second triple-double of the season and his most solid outing since returning from a groin injury.
I’m trying to improve in every area. I don’t think I’ve shot the ball well this year. I haven’t played the way I want to. I think a lot of it comes down to the fact that I’m not having enough fun out there. I need to let other things come naturally and get back to playing for the love of the game, enjoying myself.
Paolo Banchero
For three quarters, he was the center of everything. He attacked the rim with purpose, embraced contact, ran the floor, and consistently made the right reads against the defense. The Magic built their largest lead, +21 in the second quarter, by following his tempo and his ability to involve teammates. With 7:40 left and Orlando up 10, his alley-oop to Anthony Black looked like the definitive signal of a game under control.
Then came the collective blackout that ultimately cost Orlando the game, even as Banchero continued to provide flow and stability on offense.
The most encouraging takeaway wasn’t the triple-double itself, but how it came together. After ten underwhelming games since his return – marked by low efficiency and inconsistency (17.5 points per game on 39.7% shooting) – Banchero finally looked fully engaged. He went 9-of-19 from the field, knocked down two threes, and used his physicality naturally. Head coach Jamahl Mosley highlighted his aggressiveness, communication, and presence – intangibles that go beyond the box score.
The loss stings, but for Orlando this game represents a turning point. Banchero hasn’t yet closed games the way he wants to, but he’s back to playing like the star the franchise is built around. That’s where the Magic have to restart from.
