NBA Europe, Adam Silver: “It will be followed all over the world”

Adam Silver has clarified the NBA’s vision for Europe: NBA Europe will be launched with investments from member clubs, a hybrid structure, and the goal of expanding the audience beyond the EuroLeague

Before the game between the Memphis Grizzlies and Orlando Magic in Berlin, NBA commissioner Adam Silver addressed one of the most debated topics at the moment: the creation of NBA Europe, a European league inspired by the NBA model.

Silver explained that the project will not be immediately profitable:

The funding will initially come from the league’s member clubs and their investors. Think about the WNBA: it took time before it became a sustainable business. You need a long-term vision

Adam Silver

The commissioner stressed that the new league is not intended to replace the EuroLeague, but to grow European basketball and attract new fans:

I don’t think a clash with the EuroLeague is inevitable. We want to grow the game and offer new opportunities to fans

Adam Silver

Respect for traditions and collaboration with FIBA

Silver highlighted the need to combine innovation with respect for European basketball culture:

Our main partner is FIBA. We’re trying to combine the best of the NBA model with what makes European basketball unique. Not only FIBA, but also other European organizations that understand the characteristics of this sport

Adam Silver

Regarding legal threats from the EuroLeague, Silver added:

I’ve left the letters to my lawyers. I’m focused on developing basketball, not on potential legal conflicts

Talks with leading European clubs

Silver confirmed discussions with prestigious clubs such as Real Madrid and ALBA Berlin, describing the latter as “a model club that does an excellent job”. In addition, Tony Parker, owner of ASVEL, is advising the NBA on the European project.

The league is designed to include 16 teams by 2027, with 12 permanent members and 4 qualifying each year from FIBA-affiliated national leagues. This system aims to create high-level competition and sustained fan interest.

Global vision and room for all fans

Silver clarified the NBA’s objective in Europe:

If we build the league the right way, just like in the United States, it will be followed all over the world. We don’t see the EuroLeague as a limitation: there’s room for people who love both European soccer and their favorite basketball team. Our focus is attracting fans and growing the game

Adam Silver

The new league therefore promises to combine innovation, forward-looking investment, and respect for European basketball culture, opening up new opportunities for clubs, players, and fans on a global scale.
