Darius Garland Sixth Man with the Clippers: “That Way He Can Find His Rhythm”
Lue surprises everyone: Garland comes off the bench to find his rhythm without Leonard. A decision that looks beyond the immediate
Some decisions say more than the final score. The Los Angeles Clippers turned the page by trading James Harden for Darius Garland, betting on a younger profile to reshape their offensive balance. But the real message came from Tyronn Lue before the debut against Golden State: Garland coming off the bench, so he wouldn’t overlap with Kawhi Leonard.
We’re bringing him off the bench so he doesn’t have to play with Kawhi. That way he can find his rhythm, his timing, and try to run everything himself offensively

On the surface, it might sound like a demotion. In reality, it’s the opposite. Lue wants Garland to rediscover his rhythm and identity with the ball in his hands, without having to orbit around Leonard. More freedom, more possessions, more responsibility. A controlled environment to speed up his integration.
Be aggressive, push the pace, raise the intensity. That’s the thinking behind bringing him off the bench. We’re trying to get him into shape as quickly as possible. He’ll do this until we increase his minutes, and then of course you know he’ll be back in the starting lineup

Garland’s Debut Against the Warriors
At least initially, the court didn’t reward the idea. 5 points, 1 assist and 3 turnovers in the first half, with the Warriors able to pull away. The rust from injury and limited minutes were evident. Meanwhile, Leonard carried the offense, reaffirming the existing hierarchy, finishing with 23 points (9-of-14 from the field) and 8 rebounds.
But the project won’t be judged in 11 minutes. The Clippers are firmly in the play-in race and need Garland to quickly find his place in the rotation. Lue’s bet is clear: sacrifice something in the short term to build a more stable partnership over the long haul.
Because if the experiment works, Los Angeles will have found a new face to build around.
