Boston Welcomes Back Jayson Tatum: “I Still Have a Long Road Ahead”

The return of Jayson Tatum is now reality: after 298 days away from NBA courts, the Boston Celtics star reunited with his crowd and helped secure a win over the Mavericks with 15 points and 12 rebounds

Jayson Tatum return

After nearly ten months of waiting, Jayson Tatum is back on the floor with the Boston Celtics. The franchise star played his first NBA game since suffering a right Achilles tendon rupture, contributing to a 120-100 win over the Dallas Mavericks.

The return came 298 days after his last appearance, which took place during last May’s playoffs. Tatum finished with 15 points, 12 rebounds, and 7 assists in 27 minutes, a performance that represents above all the first step in a long recovery journey.

I still have a long road ahead. But this was really a good step in my journey

A Difficult Start in Jayson Tatum’s Return

As often happens after such a long absence, the start of the game was not easy for Tatum.

His first shot, a mid-range jumper, missed the mark. In the second quarter, he even missed an open-court dunk. The result: 0-for-6 shooting to begin the game and a few visible signs of frustration.

Tatum explained that he felt the full weight of the moment.

It took a long time to get here. I’ve dreamed about this moment for nights and days – the crowd, the anticipation, the atmosphere

After 42 weeks without playing an NBA game, the initial challenge was simply rediscovering the rhythm of competition.

It felt like the game was going too fast. Then it slowly slowed down once I started to relax

The Turning Point

The spark came with 1:16 left in the second quarter, when Tatum scored a putback dunk off an offensive rebound. From that moment on, the game changed.

In the following minutes, he knocked down 6 of his next 10 shots, while the TD Garden crowd erupted after every basket.

He’s someone I’ve always idolized growing up… I watched him play at Duke and followed in his footsteps. It’s surreal. For me it’s really something special to experience something like this tonight

Jaylen Brown: “He Wanted to Be Here for the Team”

Tatum’s return was also welcomed enthusiastically by his teammates.

Jaylen Brown emphasized the mental side of the Celtics star’s comeback.

It was great to have him back with us. He deserves credit for putting himself back out there for something bigger. Nobody pushed him to do it – he wanted to be here

The Injury That Changed the Celtics

Tatum’s last game before the injury was Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the New York Knicks, when he suffered the Achilles tendon rupture.

An injury that changed many things.

You never think it can happen to you. I thought I was doing everything the right way, taking care of my body. When it happened it really made me reflect on a lot of things

The blow was also significant for the team. After the injury, the Celtics dismantled much of the 2024 NBA championship roster, with Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porziņģis, and Al Horford departing.

At the start of the playoffs we thought we had three or four years ahead with that group. In an instant everything changed

Despite the doubts after those changes, Boston has remained competitive.

The Celtics are 42-21, second in the Eastern Conference, and one of the most solid teams this season.

Tatum himself praised the work of the group during his absence.

I can only congratulate the guys and the staff. They approached the season with great spirit and played together every night. I don’t know if there’s been a team more fun to watch this year

The Plan to Manage Tatum’s Return

The Celtics star’s comeback will be handled with caution. Tatum confirmed that there is a plan to limit his minutes, although he did not provide details and it is still unclear whether he will be available for the next game against Cleveland.

Head coach Joe Mazzulla, however, never doubted his determination.

The way he approached the surgery and the rehab – not just physically but mentally and emotionally – made me understand he would do everything to come back

Joe Mazzulla

For Tatum, the road is still long, but the first step has been taken. Boston has its leader back, and TD Garden once again experienced a feeling it had been missing for months: seeing No. 0 on the floor.
