Lakers Solid Without LeBron, Doncic on Reaves: “He Makes Everything Easier”
No LeBron James? No problem: Luka Doncic takes command, Austin Reaves follows his lead and the defense does the rest. The Los Angeles Lakers send a clear message to the Western Conference
No LeBron James, but plenty of substance. The Los Angeles Lakers deliver a solid performance and defeat the New York Knicks 110-97, showing the group can hold its ground even without its primary star.
LeBron was forced to sit out shortly before tipoff due to a left elbow injury and lingering foot issues, but the team didn’t flinch. Intense defense, controlled tempo and a smooth offensive flow kept the game firmly in the hands of the Lakers.
The difference was made by Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, but the real statement came on the defensive end. The Lakers held one of the league’s top offenses to 42.7% shooting, forced 19 turnovers and limited New York to 20 points below its season average.
We have to grow defensively and we’re showing that we can do it
Luka Doncic
The win was built on small details: rotations, help defense and diving on the floor when needed. JJ Redick praised exactly that mindset:
Those are hustle plays. You have to be ready… the guys have been doing that since the start of the season
JJ Redick
In other words: the right mentality.
Doncic Show, Reaves Delivers Again
When the moment gets tough, talent makes the difference. Doncic takes control of the offense and finishes with 35 points, adding 8 rebounds and 2 steals. He scores in every possible way, controls the tempo and puts the Knicks defense under constant pressure.
Reaves responds with a complete performance: 25 points, 5 assists and 3 steals. A meaningful night, especially because it comes after several difficult weeks shooting the ball.
When I first got here I told myself to just have fun. I don’t think I’ve been playing badly lately, the shots just weren’t falling. But I’ve been doing a lot of other useful things
Austin Reaves
The chemistry with Doncic is clear. The numbers speak for themselves: when they share the floor without LeBron, the Lakers hold a 9-2 record.
It’s great playing with him. He draws attention, creates space and makes everything easier… even for me
Luka Doncic
Now the Real Test Begins
The schedule won’t get any easier: tough matchups loom against the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Denver Nuggets again and two games against the Houston Rockets.
Real confirmation will be needed.
Redick keeps his feet on the ground:
I can’t overreact. Fans and media can do that, it’s part of the game. I have to look at the bigger picture
JJ Redick
And the numbers say something:
We’re 15-9 in our last 24 games. Top-10 in offense, top-15 in defense. That’s where we wanted to be
JJ Redick
Signs of growth are there, now consistency is what the Lakers need most.
