Victor Wembanyama Aims High: “Goal Is 60 Wins”

In San Antonio, 50 wins hadn’t been seen since 2017 – but for Victor Wembanyama, it’s just a stepping stone toward a much bigger goal

Victor Wembanyama, superstar dei San Antonio Spurs

Forget the timid debut of two years ago. Victor Wembanyama, the French phenom rewriting the laws of physics applied to basketball, has completed his transformation. In just three years, the San Antonio Spurs have gone from the bottom of the NBA standings to a 50-win powerhouse (with just 18 losses), pushing toward the top of the Western Conference.

The latest win over the Sacramento Kings wasn’t just No. 51 of the season – it was symbolic. Wemby finished the 132-104 road victory with 18 points, 8 rebounds, and 7-of-14 shooting, showing once again how his mere presence shifts the balance on the floor.

That first year of struggles and growth, however, still weighs on the balance Wembanyama is trying to reach. Even when looking at this season, the Spurs’ French superstar can’t be fully satisfied – almost as if that 22-60 record from the 2023/24 season still lingers.

We still have room to grow – for me, it’s not enough yet. I need to balance out my rookie season

Wembanyama’s MVP-level numbers

The leap has been dramatic. After a disappointing rookie campaign, Victor is now putting up elite numbers: 24.3 points per game – shooting 51% from the field and 36% from three – along with 11.2 rebounds and 3 blocks per game. A production that places him firmly among the favorites for the NBA MVP award.

There is, however, a procedural hurdle in his MVP race. With 13 games left, the French star must deal with NBA eligibility rules: to qualify for season awards, a player must appear in at least 65 games. A threshold that forces Wembanyama to miss virtually no time between now and April.
