Doncic facing suspension risk: “I know I let the team down”

Luka Doncic could miss the next game due to his 16th technical foul, as the Los Angeles Lakers file an appeal

The Los Angeles Lakers have filed an appeal with the NBA to request the rescission of Luka Doncic’s 16th technical foul of the season, which came during the 105-104 win over the Orlando Magic.

This is far from a minor detail: without the overturn, the Slovenian star will be forced to miss the next game against the Detroit Pistons after reaching the league’s technical foul limit.

The key incident occurred with 1:19 left in the third quarter, when referee Marat Kogut issued double technical fouls to the former Mavericks guard and Magic center Goga Bitadze, following a heated exchange during a free throw.

According to Doncic, the situation escalated due to particularly harsh insults:

I really hope it gets rescinded. I know I let the team down with that technical, but it wasn’t my intention. At some point, you have to defend yourself

Conflicting accounts: Doncic accuses, Bitadze responds

While one side speaks of personal insults, Goga Bitadze offers a completely different version. The Georgian big man claims it was Doncic who started the exchange, using offensive remarks in Serbian:

I respect Luka and his family. I would never say certain things. He said something about my mother, and I simply responded with the same words

Goga Bitadze

Bitadze added that he is willing to take responsibility, while maintaining he did not cross the line first:

If he felt I went too far, I apologize. But I only repeated what was said to me

Referees’ stance and the “warning” issue

Crew chief Marc Davis clarified after the game that both players had been warned prior to the technical fouls:

They were penalized for continued unsportsmanlike behavior. They had received a warning between the two free throws

A point the Lakers do not seem to agree with. In their appeal, the franchise argues that the officials should have handled the situation differently, potentially avoiding the immediate disciplinary escalation.
