Pistons stop Lakers’ streak, LeBron James sends a message

The Lakers fall in Detroit, but the game says much more than the final score. LeBron James shares his thoughts

The Los Angeles Lakers’ winning streak comes to an end at nine, as they fall 113-110 to the Detroit Pistons in a game decided on the final possession. On the Pistons’ home floor, the team led by LeBron James and Luka Doncic paid for a slow start and a tough shooting night, without losing the identity built over the past few weeks.

Pistons’ defense on Doncic proves decisive

Luka Doncic’s final shot – a potential game-tying three at the buzzer – hit the rim under heavy defensive pressure from Jalen Duren. A chaotic sequence, triggered by an inbound disrupted by Tobias Harris, denied the Lakers a clean look.

Still, up to that point, Los Angeles had shown encouraging signs. After falling behind by as many as 16 in the third quarter, JJ Redick’s team fought back, even taking the lead late thanks to free throws from Deandre Ayton.

Despite the loss, the focus in the Lakers’ locker room remained on their mindset:

We were down and managed to come back. We did a lot of good things, others we need to fix, but I liked how we competed

Austin Reaves

A sentiment echoed by LeBron James:

We managed to stay in games even when opponents shifted the momentum. We’re a mentally strong group

LeBron James

Shooting struggles and key absences

The Lakers struggled against one of the NBA’s top defenses (second in defensive rating), paying the price for poor shooting percentages:

  • Luka Doncic: 32 points but 11-of-29 from the field (3-of-13 from three)
  • LeBron James: 4-of-10, including a scoreless first half (a rare occurrence in his career)
  • Luke Kennard: 1-of-5

The absences of Marcus Smart and Rui Hachimura also weighed heavily, limiting rotations during a crucial stretch of the long road trip.

Despite the loss, the overall picture remains positive. Before the winning streak that began on March 5, the Lakers were sixth in the West; now they sit third with 10 games left to play.

For JJ Redick, the message is clear:

We’re a good team. I’ve believed that all season. There were moments when it showed – now it’s more consistent

JJ Redick

The goal now is twofold: maintain momentum and get healthy, without overworking the roster:

We need to finish strong, but also stay healthy

JJ Redick

The Lakers will close their road trip against the Indiana Pacers. A game LeBron James doesn’t want to take lightly:

Everyone wants to go home, but we still have work to do

LeBron James

A tough loss, but one that doesn’t change the bigger picture. The Lakers are still there – alive, competitive… and with room to take another step forward.
