“Doncic Is the MVP,” JJ Redick Has No Doubts

Luka Doncic outperforms Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in nearly every statistical category: here’s why, according to JJ Redick, Luka is the NBA MVP

As the NBA season enters its final stretch, the MVP debate is heating up – and JJ Redick has no intention of staying quiet. Despite serving a one-game suspension for his 16th technical foul, Luka Doncic remains at the center of the conversation.

According to Redick, the Slovenian star deserves the Michael Jordan MVP Award for a level of consistency that goes beyond team records:

If we finish the season the way we’re playing now, for me he’s the MVP. But sometimes there’s recency bias

JJ Redick

Redick’s argument is built on the resilience of a group that, since January 18, ranks among the top teams in the league in total wins (25 in 35 games) despite a wave of injuries.

When we started the year 15-4, you could already make the case he was the MVP. He’s been the best player in the league for two of the three segments of the season

Luka’s numbers, broken down into 25-game segments, are indeed on another level: a steady average of 33.6 points, combined with a clear improvement in shooting efficiency, going from 31.7% to 39.7% from three in the final stretch of the season.

The direct comparison with reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander comes down to volume versus efficiency. While Shai dominates in shooting percentages (56% from the field, even surpassing that mark in a 47-point game against Detroit), Doncic wins the volume battle in nearly every statistical category.

It hasn’t been as bad as people want to make it seem, especially considering all the injuries we’ve had, like several other teams. We’re very confident in the value of our nine-man rotation when healthy, and he’s the engine that drives everyone else

JJ Redick

Still, the “unwritten rule” remains a hurdle: historically, the MVP goes to the best player on the best team. With the Thunder (59-16) and Spurs led by Victor Wembanyama (56-18) ahead in the standings, Luka’s candidacy must battle against record-based logic – turning the final stretch into a test of the award’s very philosophy.
