Michael Jordan on the NBA GOAT: “It doesn’t exist”

The debate over who the NBA GOAT is continues, but Michael Jordan stresses the importance of evaluating players’ impact without absolute comparisons

One of the most enduring topics in the NBA world is the debate over the greatest player of all time. Between those who side with Michael Jordan and those who support LeBron James, it’s clear there is no objective answer.

The discussion often splits between those who focus on individual statistics and those who value team success.

Michael Jordan led the Chicago Bulls to historic dominance in the 1990s, winning 6 NBA championships and 5 MVP awards in eight years. LeBron James, on the other hand, has rewritten history in a different way: 10 NBA Finals appearances (4 wins), 22 consecutive All-Star Game selections, and records such as the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.

MJ himself weighed in on the debate, explaining that comparing players from different eras doesn’t make much sense.

There is no GOAT. I think we evolve because of others, other athletes. We learn from them and, in doing so, we move the game forward. Saying one is better than another, though, isn’t really fair

The key point is that Jordan’s NBA is different from LeBron’s NBA, so making direct comparisons has limited value. Modern basketball is both the product of the past and the foundation for the future.

Other players, like Victor Wembanyama, could eventually enter the GOAT conversation, but it remains essential to recognize their impact on the game without relying on absolute comparisons.
