Thunder, Sam Presti’s blueprint to build a dynasty

Sam Presti has designed a winning strategy for the Oklahoma City Thunder, balancing supermax contracts and long-term competitiveness

Despite the rising cost of their roster, the Oklahoma City Thunder appear poised to thrive in the coming years thanks to the vision of general manager Sam Presti.

The current NBA Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) heavily penalizes teams that spend above the cap, a measure designed to maintain competitive balance and discourage franchises from stacking their roster with stars.

With three supermax contracts on the team – Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren, and Jalen Williams – one would expect OKC to face major challenges managing the salary cap. Yet, Presti seems to be one step ahead.

As highlighted by ClutchPoints insider Brett Siegel, the Thunder have structured their finances with flexibility, including the ability to create cap space as early as next offseason.

Sam Presti had a plan when he extended those contracts. The goal was to stay in a strong cap position with the current roster, which is competitive for a title. With the options on Isaiah Hartenstein’s $28.5 million deal, Luguentz Dort’s $18.2 million, and Kenrich Williams’ $7.1 million, they can free up around $54 million and renegotiate

Financial flexibility and salary cap management

For next season, the Thunder already have about $122 million committed to their Big Three. That figure is expected to rise to around $152 million by 2027-28, when Gilgeous-Alexander’s MVP-level supermax kicks in.

Despite the significant financial commitment, the team has tools to ease the burden: contract options, first-round picks, and young players on team-friendly deals like Jared McCain and Ajay Mitchell.

This flexibility will allow OKC to remain competitive at the highest level, avoiding the pitfalls of the luxury tax while maintaining a core ready to grow together. In short, Presti’s strategy isn’t just about winning now – it’s about building a sustainable dynasty for the long term.
