Wembanyama Injury Puts MVP Race at Risk: “No Updates”

Victor Wembanyama sidelined with a rib injury: San Antonio Spurs on edge, with the 65-game threshold now at risk

Victor Wembanyma Injury

The San Antonio Spurs defeat the Philadelphia 76ers 115-102, but the real story of the night is elsewhere: Victor Wembanyama was forced to exit at halftime due to a left rib contusion.

A situation that has everyone holding their breath, especially at this stage of the season.

The collision with Paul George

It all started in the second quarter, following a midcourt collision with Paul George. Wembanyama was receiving a pass in transition when the two made hard contact.

Immediately after the play, the French big man headed to the locker room. Shortly after, he returned to the bench and even attempted to get back on the floor, playing the final minutes of the first half.

But with just seconds left before halftime, he asked to be subbed out again and went back to the locker room – this time for good.

Johnson: “It’s a positive sign he tried to return”

After the game, head coach Mitch Johnson didn’t provide specific updates but highlighted one key point:

I don’t have any updates. The fact that he was able to come back and play a few minutes is a positive sign

In other words: the situation needs monitoring, but there’s no immediate alarm.

Now the 65-game rule comes into play

Before exiting, Wembanyama still made his impact felt:
17 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 blocks in 15 minutes and 40 seconds.

Minutes that also matter in the race for NBA awards: this game qualifies under the exceptions tied to minimum playing time.

Here’s the key issue. To remain eligible for end-of-season honors – including MVP and Defensive Player of the Year – Wembanyama must meet the 65-game requirement.

And he’s not completely safe yet: he’ll need to log at least 20 minutes in one of the Spurs’ final three games to secure eligibility.

If the injury worsens, the risk becomes very real.
