LaMelo Ball Comes Through as Heat Are Eliminated: “I Was About to Ruin Everything”
A wild finish in the NBA Play-In saw LaMelo Ball deliver in overtime, lifting the Charlotte Hornets past the Miami Heat and into the next stage
A chaotic, momentum-swinging game ended with LaMelo Ball stealing the spotlight, hitting the bucket that sealed a thriller destined to be remembered.
The Charlotte Hornets defeated the Miami Heat 127-126 in a dramatic overtime finish, earning a massive play-in win and sending Miami home.
Thriller Ending: Mistakes, Redemption, and the Game-Winner
Everything happened in the closing seconds. After putting Charlotte up five, Ball made two costly mistakes: a turnover and a foul on a three-point attempt that allowed Tyler Herro to complete the comeback at the line.
But then the Hornets star took full responsibility:
I had to win the game. I felt like I messed it up, so I had to fix everything
LaMelo Ball
With 4.7 seconds left, he attacked the rim and scored the go-ahead layup. On the other end, Miles Bridges slammed the door shut with a game-saving block on Davion Mitchell at the buzzer.
The Spectrum Center erupted after a game filled with nonstop drama.
Key Performances: Ball Leads, Bridges and White Deliver
The game showcased elite shot-making and composure under pressure:
- LaMelo Ball: 30 points, 10 assists
- Miles Bridges: 28 points, 9 rebounds
- Coby White: 19 points, including the three-pointer that forced overtime
Ball also made play-in history, becoming just the fourth player ever to record at least 30 points and 10 assists in a play-in game, joining names such as Kyrie Irving and Damian Lillard.
The crowd played a major role as well. Head coach Charles Lee praised the atmosphere:
The atmosphere was exactly how I imagined it – noise, energy, emotion. We wanted to give that to our fans

Miami Out of the Playoffs: Adebayo’s Absence Looms Large
For the Heat, the loss means no playoff appearance for the first time since the 2018-19 season.
Bam Adebayo exited in the second quarter with a back injury, leaving a major void in the middle. Miami got 28 points from Davion Mitchell and 27 from Andrew Wiggins, but it wasn’t enough.
Head coach Erik Spoelstra tried to keep perspective afterward:
There’s nothing to be ashamed of. The guys felt like they deserved to win. Sometimes that still isn’t enough

Charlotte will now play for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot in its next matchup. The goal is clear: return to the postseason after a 10-year absence.
