NBA Playoffs: For the Rockets, the Lakers May Be a Formality

The Houston Rockets open the first round against the Los Angeles Lakers in a series that, at least on paper, appears to have a clear outcome

There’s probably a universe where this series happens with everyone healthy (including Adams), and in that reality it might be the most intriguing matchup of the first round.

In another version of that universe, Doncic also carries over the elite form from his final month of the regular season, and his matchup with Amen Thompson as primary defender becomes the most anticipated duel of the series. In that scenario, the Lakers might even be favored with home-court advantage.

But in this reality – with Los Angeles depleted and unbalanced, and the Rockets still searching for chemistry despite a strong finish to the season – the series looks far more straightforward, with little mystery about who should advance. And that team is clearly Ime Udoka’s group.

Because neither Doncic nor Austin Reaves are expected to be available for the series – let’s make that clear immediately, even if no one can stop you from believing in miracles.
And in this case, forcing an unlikely return would also carry significant risk, especially the possibility of aggravating already delicate injuries.

Key Storylines in Rockets-Lakers

LeBron vs. Durant: A Star Duel, But an Uneven One

From a media standpoint, the matchup between LeBron James and Kevin Durant remains compelling.

The issue is the context: the Lakers’ offense will fall almost entirely on James’ shoulders, and at age 41 he’ll be asked to carry a massive load just to keep Los Angeles competitive.

Durant, by contrast, should operate in a much more favorable environment – able to manage his energy and strike in key moments.

The real question will be whether LeBron can still have enough left in the fourth quarter. But to get there, he may already have spent too much.

The Ayton Factor: The Lakers’ Only Real Hope

For the Lakers, Deandre Ayton is essential.

JJ Redick may not fully trust him, but without his production in the paint, Los Angeles has little chance of competing.

They need a consistent Ayton – active on the glass and engaged on both ends. Without that, their chances of extending the series remain slim.

Tari Eason and Houston’s Balance

Keep an eye on Tari Eason for Houston.

He can be the perfect glue piece: rebounding, defense, transition play, and three-point shooting. When he’s in rhythm, he significantly raises the Rockets’ ceiling.

If he struggles, however, he can become a liability due to turnovers and spacing issues in an already imperfect offense.

One additional note: Eason is also viewed as a player who could interest the Lakers down the line.

Extra Possessions and Turnovers: Houston’s Real Edge

The Rockets remain one of the NBA’s best offensive rebounding teams, even without Steven Adams.

Both teams have had stretches of turnover problems, but when Houston limits mistakes, its overall consistency rises sharply.

The Lakers, without Doncic and Reaves, lose much of their late-game offensive reliability.

That shifts the balance even further toward Houston, especially in close games.

Rockets-Lakers Prediction: Houston Headed for a Sweep

Even assuming a vintage 2018 LeBron James performance, it’s difficult to envision a scenario where this series is truly competitive.

Houston has more depth, more energy, and a significantly more favorable overall context.

The most realistic result is a Rockets sweep (4-0). Best-case scenario for Los Angeles: they steal one at home and avoid the sweep, losing the series 4-1.
