Without Doncic and Reaves, Redick Prepares Plan to Stop the Rockets

It will be LeBron James carrying the team once again, while Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves focus on recovering from injuries throughout the first round

The Los Angeles Lakers head into the first round of the NBA Playoffs facing what looks like an uphill battle. Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves will both be unavailable, with no clear timetable for their return. Head coach JJ Redick didn’t sugarcoat the latest injury update:

They’re out indefinitely. I won’t have any further updates for you this week

The situation is critical, but the numbers still offer a glimmer of hope. Thanks to another monumental season from LeBron James, the Lakers secured the fourth seed in the West (53-29), clinching home-court advantage against the dangerous Houston Rockets in the final stretch of the regular season.

However, without Doncic’s 33.5 points per game (out with a hamstring strain) and Reaves’ 23.3 (sidelined with an oblique injury), L.A.’s offense loses roughly 57 points per night.

Still, Redick has already outlined the path to a potential miracle, relying on a blue-collar approach:

Protect the ball and box out – that’s where this series will be decided. Without Luka and Austin, we can’t afford to give the Rockets second chances. That’s all we worked on today in practice: boxing out and managing possessions. We have to beat them at their own game

Recovery Timeline for Doncic and Reaves

The recovery timelines for the two stars stretch over several weeks: Doncic is targeting a return in the second round (potentially no sooner than 30-35 days), while Reaves is expected to be out for at least a month.

That means LeBron James will have to shoulder the entire load in a series shaping up to be a physical, grind-it-out battle. Nothing new for the four-time NBA champion, but at 41 years old, fatigue could become a factor sooner than usual.

Houston is a young, physical team that dominates the boards (though they rank last in bench scoring). For the Lakers, survival hinges on turning every possession into a must-win battle.
