The Orlando Magic dominate Charlotte in the Play-In with a record-setting performance. Aggressive defense and Banchero’s leadership reshape their season

The Orlando Magic picked the perfect moment to show their best version. In the win-or-go-home Play-In game, Jamahl Mosley’s team crushed the Charlotte Hornets 121-90, delivering the largest margin of victory in NBA Play-In history.

A performance that leaves no room for interpretation: intensity, physicality, and urgency. Three elements that turned an up-and-down season into a new opportunity.

Dominant defense and pace: the key to the Magic’s success

The game was decided in the first two quarters, where Orlando built a commanding lead. With a suffocating, aggressive defense, the Magic forced 14 turnovers in the first 24 minutes, converting them into 22 points.

The energy was perfectly embodied by Desmond Bane and Jalen Suggs, who highlighted a signature sequence: pressure on Miles Bridges, a steal, and total chaos for Charlotte.

From there, Orlando took complete control, stretching the lead to +35 in the first half and effectively ending the game before halftime.

Mosley explained it clearly:

When you play with urgency, knowing you can go home or keep your season alive, this is the result. There are no second chances

Jamahl Mosley

Paolo Banchero leads the response

After a subpar performance against Philadelphia, Paolo Banchero answered like a leader: 25 points, 6 assists, and 5 rebounds, setting the physical and mental tone of the game.

His message was clear:

Great players have to respond. You can’t accept underperforming in games like this. You have to be there for your teammates

Paolo Banchero

Alongside him, solid contributions came from Anthony Black and Bane himself, symbols of the team’s new identity following the offseason trade.

Charlotte Hornets unrecognizable

The Charlotte Hornets came in with confidence, fueled by one of the league’s best second halves of the season. Yet the Magic’s pressure completely knocked them out of rhythm.

LaMelo Ball, who scored 23 points, summed it up this way:

We put ourselves in too deep a hole. We couldn’t get out of it

LaMelo Ball

Despite a promising season and hopes of ending a long playoff drought, Charlotte came to a sudden stop against a team that was mentally more prepared.

Next stop: Detroit Pistons

Now the Magic will travel to Detroit to face the top-seeded Detroit Pistons in Game 1 of their playoff series.

Mosley didn’t hold back:

It’s going to be a battle. There will be a lot of physicality and aggression on both sides

Jamahl Mosley

If Orlando wants to keep surprising, they’ll need to replicate this identity: elite defense, high pace, and a win-or-go-home mentality.
