Victor Wembanyama did not disappoint in his NBA Playoffs debut. The San Antonio Spurs big man, an MVP finalist, led his team to a 111-98 win over the Portland Trail Blazers, immediately giving them a 1-0 series lead.

First postseason game, sky-high pressure, and two franchise legends – Tim Duncan and David Robinson – in attendance. Still, Wembanyama showed remarkable composure, unfazed by the moment.

It’s obviously different. But we were very solid in the regular season, so there was no reason to change our approach. Tactically, some things change, especially in terms of preparation time and the fact that we’ll face the same team multiple times in a row

His performance reflected both confidence and maturity. Asked by ESPN about the pressure of playing in front of two franchise icons, Wembanyama answered with a clear metaphor:

I wouldn’t call it pressure. I feel safe. If you stumble, you know there are plenty of hands ready to catch you. It’s been like that since day one

On the court, the Spurs’ No. 1 dominated with 35 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 blocks, setting a significant record: he became the player with the most points in a Spurs playoff debut, surpassing Duncan.

The Texas franchise continues its tradition of elite big men, maintaining a structured and gradual development path for its talent – one that, so far, is producing tangible results.

Head coach Mitch Johnson highlighted his player’s mindset, emphasizing how Wembanyama is already focused on winning it all:

There’s a level of preparation, attention to detail, and competitiveness required in the playoffs. And he has a strong desire to be part of that

Despite the immediate impact, the goal remains clear. Wembanyama is focused on the bigger picture and the chance to go all the way.

With Game 2 scheduled for April 22, the Spurs will look to build on their momentum and take a 2-0 lead before heading on the road, aiming to close out the Trail Blazers series as quickly as possible.
