Cooper Flagg Rookie Of The Year NBA 2026

The future of the NBA already has a new star: Cooper Flagg. The Dallas Mavericks standout has won the 2026 NBA Rookie of the Year, capping one of the most competitive and compelling races in recent memory. Pushing him to the very end was Kon Knueppel, his former Duke teammate, who delivered an outstanding season with the Charlotte Hornets.

The vote, decided by a panel of 100 journalists, saw Flagg prevail by the slimmest of margins: just 26 points. The Mavericks rookie received 56 first-place votes, while the remaining 44 went to Knueppel. A tight battle that highlights the elite level both players reached.

From the start of the season, Rookie of the Year had been one of Flagg’s stated goals. The Mavericks phenom never hid how much the award meant to him.

I would’ve been upset. It’s an award every rookie dreams of winning. It’s one of those milestones you want to reach as soon as you get to the NBA

Now, though, there’s no room for disappointment. The 2006-born talent can celebrate a recognition that crowns a remarkable season. At just 19 years old, Cooper Flagg becomes the second-youngest player ever to win the award, behind only LeBron James.

The battle with Kon Knueppel made it even more special

The race was made even more compelling by his duel with Kon Knueppel, a close friend as well as a rival on the court. The two shared an important journey at Duke, and their bond goes far beyond competition.

I watched his games every night. Kon is one of my brothers. We have a special bond and we’ll always be there for each other. I followed him as a fan, even with that healthy competition

Records, talent, and leadership: the future is his

Flagg’s season was nothing short of extraordinary. He became the youngest player in NBA history to record games of 35, 40, 45, and 50 points. He also became the youngest teenager ever to dish out at least 10 assists in a single game.

His offensive masterpiece came on April 3, when he scored 51 points against the Orlando Magic, after already setting the teenage scoring record with 49 points against Charlotte in January.

He also recorded six games with at least 30 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists – more than all other rookies combined.

Cooper Flagg’s message to the next generation

After receiving the award, Flagg shared a message for future rookies entering the league:

Go out there every night and play as hard as you can
