Steve Kerr proposes eliminating the three-point Shot

Steve Kerr makes a proposal bound to spark debate: eliminate the three-point line to revolutionize modern basketball. Phil Jackson responded to the idea

Basketball has changed dramatically over the last several years. Today, the three-point shot has become a central part of the game, while in the past possessions more often ended with the ball going to the center near the rim. Much of that evolution is tied to the Golden State Warriors dynasty led by Steve Kerr.

The former Chicago Bulls player, an elite shooter during his career, turned that skill into a true basketball philosophy once he became a coach.

Kerr himself, in a recent interview, explained what he would change about modern basketball.

I would never introduce a four-point line. Actually, I’d eliminate the three-point line too. I think you should always look for the best shot possible. Back in the day, because of that, you simply threw the ball to the center. Today we know very well what the most efficient shots are: layups and threes

The nine-time NBA champion then added:

Those are more profitable shots than midrange attempts. Between those two areas, there’s been a huge gap created, and anyone shooting from there is often seen as making a bad decision. I wonder what the NBA would look like without the three-point line

Kerr’s vision goes in the opposite direction of those who have pushed for a four-point line. Responding to his comments was also his former Bulls coach, Phil Jackson, who spoke publicly on social media after a long absence.

I’ve been asking the NBA for 15 years to widen the court: corner shots should be from 20 feet

Phil Jackson

For now, it remains an interesting thought experiment. But one thing is clear: when voices like Steve Kerr and Phil Jackson speak, it’s always worth listening.
