Edwards returns and carries the T’Wolves: “I’m back!”
Anthony Edwards’ surprise return changes Game 1: Minnesota defeats the Spurs despite Victor Wembanyama’s playoff blocks record
The comeback no one expected completely changed the momentum of the series. The Minnesota Timberwolves stole Game 1 in San Antonio, beating the Spurs 104-102 in the Western Conference semifinals behind an immediate impact performance from Anthony Edwards, who returned from injury.
He was expected to miss at least the first two games, but instead he stepped on the floor with 18 points and plenty of determination to make a difference. And he absolutely did.
On the other side, an incredible defensive performance from Victor Wembanyama was not enough. He finished with 11 points, 15 rebounds, and 12 blocks, setting a new NBA playoff record. A historic triple-double, considering blocked shots have only been officially tracked since the 1970s.
Down-to-the-wire finish, missed opportunity for Spurs
The game was decided in the final possessions. San Antonio cut the deficit to two thanks to a steal by Devin Vassell and a layup by Dylan Harper with 31 seconds remaining. Minnesota, however, held firm.
After a miss by Julius Randle, the Spurs had one final shot to tie or win the game, but Julian Champagnie’s three-pointer at the buzzer missed. Final score: 104-102, as the Wolves delivered one of the biggest playoff upsets in franchise history.
Edwards’ return changes everything
His presence was not expected, but Edwards worked nonstop to return ahead of schedule after the knee injury he suffered against Denver.
And after knocking down his first step-back three, he turned toward the Spurs bench and shouted:
I’m back! I’m back!
Anthony Edwards
The message was crystal clear.
Edwards self-critical: “I have to be better”
Despite the win, Edwards was not satisfied. After the game, he was tough on himself.
I made too many mistakes late, I’m disappointed in myself… Seventy-five percent of my game is mental, and in the last two minutes it wasn’t
Anthony Edwards
He added:
We have to stay locked in on the game plan, especially me. I can’t give up two offensive rebounds like that. Maybe I’m not at my best athletically, but I have to do the little things that win these games

Game 1 already revealed a lot – but not everything. Minnesota sent a strong message, while San Antonio learned it will need more. If this is only the beginning, this series is going to be anything but calm.
