Messi or Ronaldo? Giannis Antetokounmpo makes his choice
Giannis Antetokounmpo takes a side in soccer’s most debated argument. His reasoning goes beyond pure talent – and also involves Kevin Durant
In the classic debate between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, Giannis Antetokounmpo has now offered his take as well. The Milwaukee Bucks star, appearing on Goran Dragić’s podcast, made it clear where he stands.
For Giannis, the issue is not so much who is the greatest overall, but the type of journey each player took. “At that level, they’re all GOATs already”, he said, emphasizing that the debate remains open because both reached once-in-a-generation heights.
Antetokounmpo then shifted the conversation to a personal level, explaining why he feels closer to Ronaldo. According to him, the difference lies in how the path was built.
The Greek superstar pointed out that his game and career are the result of constant work, daily growth and a competitive mindset. He does not view himself as a “natural” talent like Kevin Durant, whom he instead associates more with Messi.
If I were KD, I’d say Messi. Me? I’ve always been work, work, work

Beyond the soccer comparison, Giannis’ message was clear: what impresses him most is mentality, built on discipline and continuous improvement. That is the trait that connects him to the Portuguese legend even more than raw talent.
Messi and Ronaldo remain two absolute icons of global sports, but for Antetokounmpo the difference comes down to the personal journey. And in his own case, the key word remains just one: work.
