It had to be the response game – and it was. After two quiet performances and criticism coming from every direction, James Harden showed his experience, composure, and the offensive arsenal that made him one of the hardest players to guard for years in the NBA.

In the most delicate stretch of the game, the Cleveland Cavaliers’ No. 13 took over and led the team to a 116-109 victory over the Detroit Pistons in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. A huge win, allowing the Cavs to cut the series deficit to 2-1 after losing the first two games.

Harden’s signature was written all over the final 90 seconds. First, the classic mid-range step-back to give Cleveland breathing room. Then a floater through traffic. Finally, the move that has defined much of his career: a deep step-back three from beyond seven meters to seal the game.

After the game, Harden spoke calmly, like someone who knows exactly what is needed in those moments:

I like having those responsibilities. When my moment comes, I simply try to create space and make plays. It’s something I work on every day. Everything comes from repetition and confidence in yourself

James Harden

This is exactly why the Cavaliers traded for Harden at the deadline: to pair Donovan Mitchell with a veteran capable of handling pressure and late-game playoff possessions. Mitchell, who finished with 35 points, had no problem letting Harden control the ball late.

Because he’s James Harden. I am who I am, and he is who he is. That’s what makes us so dangerous

Donovan Mitchell

The first two games had raised plenty of concerns. Harden had shot just 32% from the field, struggled badly from three-point range, and committed more turnovers than made baskets. Those numbers revived the usual playoff criticism.

Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson was pleased with the response:

This is the James Harden we’ve known for years. Tonight we needed exactly this version of him

Kenny Atkinson

Beyond the 19 total points, what mattered most was when and how they came. Cleveland needed calm, leadership, and someone who could slow down the chaos of crunch time. Harden did all of that without forcing the action, picking the perfect moments to strike.

As for the criticism, Harden doesn’t seem too concerned:

People will always talk – when you play well and when you don’t. I just focus on understanding what the team needs and doing everything possible to win

James Harden

In the end, people remember the plays – not the talk. And Harden’s late-game shotmaking may have brought the Cavaliers back to life and completely reopened this series.
