Shaq pumps the brakes on Harden hype: “One game isn’t enough”
James Harden played a key role in the Cleveland Cavaliers’ wins over the Detroit Pistons, but Shaquille O’Neal still has doubts about the Beard’s consistency in the NBA playoffs
Against the Detroit Pistons, James Harden once again came up big against the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 3 and Game 4 victories. Shaquille O’Neal, however, still has major concerns about Harden’s staying power.
The Cavaliers’ Game 4 win over the Detroit Pistons also featured James Harden as the perfect complement to Donovan Mitchell’s 43-point performance. After also delivering the dagger three-pointer in Game 3 to seal a 116-109 win, the “Beard” showed he still has the late-game poise of his prime years.
Still, despite the clutch showing, the postgame reaction was far from unanimous. Speaking on Inside the NBA, Shaquille O’Neal voiced serious doubts about the 36-year-old veteran’s reliability, mixing praise for the future Hall of Famer’s career with criticism of his current consistency.
James is an elite-level player who will always be remembered for his scoring and his shooting. He played well tonight and I’m happy for him. The question now is: can you keep doing it? Over the last few years we’ve seen one good game followed by four or five bad ones

Shaq’s expectations and Cleveland’s reality
According to Shaquille O’Neal, the Cavaliers did not bring in James Harden merely to become more competitive – they brought him in to win an NBA championship. While Cleveland’s backcourt has become even more dynamic with his arrival, the Lakers legend expects more from a former MVP.
In Cleveland’s wins in Game 3 and Game 4, Harden rediscovered his rhythm after a few struggles in the first two games of the series: 21 points and 9 assists per game while shooting 46% from the field and 50% from three-point range. For Shaq, though, this must be only the spark that reignites the elite form the league expects from him.
Hopefully this gets him going so he can do what we expect
Shaquille O’Neal
O’Neal closed by emphasizing that Harden’s mission in Ohio is to take the team beyond the Conference Finals.
Harden’s response: a new identity
For his part, James Harden appears to have embraced the criticism with the indifference of a player who has redefined his role on the floor. Far removed from the days when he averaged over 30 points per game with the Houston Rockets, Harden is averaging 19.5 points and 6 assists in these playoffs.
Honestly, it’s not about everybody else – it’s about what we tell ourselves in this locker room. I wasn’t scoring 30 a game even in the regular season. I’m here to find my spots, understand what the team needs, and contribute the best way I can
James Harden
The veteran then quieted the noise by shifting the focus back to the series.
This is a league where it’s make or miss. If you score 30, they praise you; if you have a bad game, people talk. I’ve done an incredible job throughout my career understanding what my role needs to be, especially as I’ve gotten older, and doing whatever it takes to win
James Harden
For James Harden, winning remains the only metric that matters – even if, for Shaquille O’Neal, true success will only come through a sustained return to superstar form.
