Beyond Wembanyama: the Slash Bros are driving the Spurs

Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper are stepping into the spotlight in the Western Conference Finals, becoming a major factor in the Spurs’ Game 1 win over OKC

During the night between Monday, May 18 and Tuesday, May 19, the Western Conference Finals officially tipped off at the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City. Battling for a spot in the NBA Finals are the Thunder and Spurs, two of the best teams in basketball right now, and Game 1 delivered an unforgettable show that ended with a San Antonio victory after double overtime.

Sharing the spotlight alongside home favorite Shai Gilgeous-Alexander – who received his regular-season MVP award from Adam Silver just before tip-off – was unquestionably Victor Wembanyama. His performance, already etched into the record books thanks to 41 points and 24 rebounds, was practically flawless: dominance in the paint, elite rim protection, and outrageous offensive production despite constant double teams from the Thunder.

The San Antonio Spurs are not just Wembanyama

Behind the French star’s performance is a system that works, led in part by the duo of Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper. The “Slash Bros,” young talents selected by the Spurs in recent drafts, are highly complementary players with the potential to become decisive pieces in the series against OKC.

Their impact becomes even more impressive considering their age: barely over 20 years old, yet already key contributors in a Conference Finals rotation. Castle’s defense, athleticism and playmaking blend seamlessly with Harper’s ability to attack the rim and create offense, forming a versatile backcourt duo around 6-foot-6 capable of defending multiple positions.

A complete package, made even stronger by the presence in the locker room of veteran De’Aaron Fox, a technical and emotional leader for the group — whose absence in Game 1 never caused San Antonio to lose its footing for a moment.

The series is still far from over, but Wembanyama, the Slash Bros, and the system built by coach Mitch Johnson continue to establish themselves as real kryptonite for the Thunder. OKC has been put on notice: the Spurs are much more than a one-man show.
