Harden’s defense back under the spotlight

James Harden’s defense is under renewed scrutiny against the Knicks, who repeatedly targeted him in crucial possessions with Jalen Brunson taking center stage

The Knicks stole Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals with a stunning comeback against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Late in regulation and throughout overtime, New York ramped up the pace and found key buckets by relentlessly attacking Cleveland’s defensive schemes.

Once again, Jalen Brunson took over the spotlight. Possession after possession, the Knicks point guard punished the defense in isolation and carried his team down the stretch. He finished with 38 total points, including 15 in the fourth quarter alone, becoming the driving force behind the comeback.

The spotlight ultimately landed on James Harden, who was viewed as one of the primary targets New York built its offense around. Not everyone, however, agrees with that interpretation. Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson defended his player and emphasized his impact throughout the postseason.

He’s been one of our best defenders during these playoffs. I trust him – he’s smart and has great hands defensively…

Some criticism also came Atkinson’s way, as he drew attention for several late timeout decisions, both during the Knicks’ comeback and in overtime, when the momentum had already shifted.

Now all eyes turn to Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals, scheduled between Thursday and Friday. Cleveland cannot afford another mistake: a response is needed to avoid making the road to the NBA Finals significantly more complicated.
