NBA issues warning to Victor Wembanyama

The NBA issued a formal warning to Victor Wembanyama after Game 5 against OKC, following the Spurs star’s failure to appear for postgame media duties

Victor Wembanyama Spurs NBA Playoff NBA

After the 127-114 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals, Victor Wembanyama’s rough night didn’t end on the court. The NBA also issued an official warning to the French superstar.

The reason? Wembanyama did not speak to reporters after the game, violating the league’s postseason media access rules.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the NBA decided to stop at a formal warning for the San Antonio Spurs star.

Tough Night for Wembanyama

In Game 5, Wembanyama finished with 20 points but shot just 4-for-15 from the field. Numbers well below his usual standards, especially in such a crucial game in the race to the NBA Finals. Even more surprising was his rebounding total: just one rebound in the first half.

NBA Remains Strict About Media Availability

For years, the NBA has required players to make themselves available to reporters after games, especially during the playoffs. The league has previously handed out significant fines to players who skipped media sessions.

In 2023, for example, Jimmy Butler and Dillon Brooks were each fined $25,000 for failing to meet with the media after playoff games. In this case, however, the NBA chose to issue only a warning, avoiding an immediate financial penalty for Wembanyama.

The situation stands out even more considering the French phenom received the 2025-26 Magic Johnson Award just weeks ago, an honor given by the Professional Basketball Writers Association to the player who best combines excellence on the court with professionalism and accessibility toward media and fans.

A recognition that makes this episode even more unusual, especially during such a delicate moment in the Spurs’ season.
