NBA Finals 2026: Spurs and Knicks, two different roads to a championship

The 2026 NBA Finals showcase two completely different team-building philosophies: the Spurs’ patient, methodical approach and the Knicks’ aggressive all-in strategy through the trade market

Two philosophies, one championship. The 2026 NBA Finals between the Spurs and Knicks will pit two organizations built on fundamentally opposite principles against each other.

On one side is San Antonio, which has climbed back to the top of the league after nearly a decade of rebuilding. Following Kawhi Leonard’s departure in 2018, the Spurs rebuilt their system step by step, fully committing to the development of talent acquired through the NBA Draft while using the trade market only to fine-tune the roster (with additions such as Fox, Kornet, and the Champagnie gamble after he was waived by the 76ers).

The Knicks, meanwhile, took the exact opposite path. Leon Rose and the front office built their roster almost entirely through player acquisitions, beginning with the signing of Jalen Brunson in the summer of 2022. That move helped New York return to the playoffs consistently and laid the foundation for a rapid rebuild.

Between 2023 and 2024, the organization made its definitive all-in move to become a true contender, adding Hart, Anunoby, Bridges, and Towns. It was a luxury makeover that came at a cost: sacrificing the future (trading away players such as Quickley, Barrett, and DiVincenzo, along with nine draft picks) in exchange for a chance to win immediately.

San Antonio and New York have followed two very different paths, shaped by opposite visions and planning strategies. Which approach will prove successful in the 2026 NBA Finals?
