Garnett criticizes Wemby’s tears: “He has to stay emotionless”
The Celtics legend took aim at Victor Wembanyama’s emotional reaction and then made his NBA Finals prediction: Knicks in six games
The San Antonio Spurs’ celebration after clinching a spot in the NBA Finals has unexpectedly sparked controversy. Moments after their Game 7 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder, cameras immediately found Victor Wembanyama, who broke down in tears from exhaustion and joy after leading the Spurs back to the Finals for the first time in 12 seasons in his playoff debut.
It was a powerful emotional release, but one that didn’t sit well with Kevin Garnett. The Boston Celtics legend, who served as a personal mentor to Victor last summer, sharply criticized the young star during the latest episode of the KG Certified podcast, which he co-hosts with Paul Pierce.
Garnett, without much diplomacy, predicted a New York Knicks victory in six games and almost framed the series as a necessary lesson for the Spurs’ franchise cornerstone:
I’ve got Knicks in six. They’ll finish it in Game 6. The Alien needs to go through some suffering to understand the true value of an NBA championship. He’s got to earn his stripes. Crying over a Western Conference title? Honestly, that was too emotional for my taste
Kevin Garnett
According to KG, a leader should remain composed until the ultimate goal is achieved, without spending valuable emotional energy before lifting the Larry O’Brien Trophy:
There are still four more games to win. You’ve got to stay focused. The conference trophy is nice, sure, but the real goal is much higher than that
Kevin Garnett
Wembanyama’s response to the broader criticism did not take long to arrive. Speaking to French media, he explained the reason behind the emotional moment after a series in which he dominated, earning Conference Finals MVP honors and closing out Game 7 with 22 points and 7 rebounds:
I think it comes down to the fear of being judged by others and the social expectation that you have to behave a certain way. Personally, I refuse to carry the burden of hiding my emotions
Victor Wembanyama
It will be interesting to see how Wembanyama processes a public critique coming from someone he once viewed as an important mentor in his development.
Garnett’s comments could either unsettle him – or provide the final piece of motivation he needs to prove the old guard wrong on the court.
