Wembanyama’s mistake, Towns makes him pay: Knicks two wins away from an NBA title
The New York Knicks take a 2-0 lead in the NBA Finals after a 105-104 victory in San Antonio, with Karl-Anthony Towns leading the way and a dramatic finish decided by a costly mistake from Victor Wembanyama
The New York Knicks are heading back from San Antonio with a massive prize. Their 105-104 win in Game 2 of the NBA Finals gives Mike Brown’s team a 2-0 series lead and moves them closer to a championship that has eluded the franchise since 1973.
Once again, Karl-Anthony Towns made the difference, serving as both the emotional and on-court leader of a team that appears to have learned from its past mistakes. The Knicks big man finished with 21 points, 13 rebounds, and 4 assists, delivering a complete performance on both ends of the floor.
The game seemed firmly in New York’s control after the Knicks built a 14-point lead, but the Spurs fought back behind Victor Wembanyama, who scored 29 points and was especially dominant in the fourth quarter. With less than a minute remaining, San Antonio had even managed to take the lead.
When the game was on the line, however, the difference in experience between the two teams became evident.
With the score tied at 104-104 and less than 12 seconds remaining, the Spurs had possession and a chance to decide the game. Instead of holding for the final shot, Wembanyama committed a costly mistake, turning the ball over and handing possession to Jalen Brunson.
The Knicks star was immediately fouled by the French phenom and stepped to the line, where he delivered the game-winning points. The former Maverick made the first free throw, which proved enough to secure the victory for New York.
Towns knows these situations well. Over the years, he has experienced both playoff success and heartbreak, and he is now putting that experience to work for New York.
I’ve been on the other side of this, when you’re a young team trying to do everything possible to win. We continue to rely on experience and execution
Karl-Anthony Towns
Even when Brunson struggled from the field, finishing just 7-for-25, New York found answers through Towns. The big man scored 17 first-half points, using his offensive skill set to throw Wembanyama off rhythm.
You call them ‘bad shooting nights,’ I see a player who made the free throw that won us the game. I also watched him hit some of the most unbelievable shots I’ve ever seen in Game 1 to win that game for us. When it’s time to decide a game, you don’t mess around with No. 11
Karl-Anthony Towns
The defensive impact was just as significant. Towns and Mitchell Robinson have done a better job containing the French superstar than any previous opponent. Through two games, Wembanyama is shooting just 40% from the field and has already committed 10 turnovers.
According to Mike Brown, the turning point came during the season when the Knicks stopped asking Towns to adapt to the system and instead built the system around his strengths.
We reached the point where everyone felt comfortable. That’s what the regular season is for: finding your identity and preparing for moments like this
Mike Brown
A decision that has paid enormous dividends. Since Brown expanded Towns’ responsibilities as a playmaker during New York’s playoff series against Atlanta, the Knicks have not lost a game.
Now the series shifts to Madison Square Garden, and New York has a golden opportunity. If the Knicks win the next two games, they can close out the series in front of their home crowd.
It’s an incredible feeling knowing how mentally tough this team is. They keep fighting no matter the score or how much time is left. Going through this experience with this group has been a real pleasure
Mike Brown
After 13 consecutive playoff victories and 8 straight road wins, New York can see the finish line getting closer. The Spurs are still alive, but they now have their backs against the wall. And against these Knicks, every mistake can prove extremely costly.
