Ben Stiller condemns violent Knicks fans: “That’s not what being a fan is about”

Violent incidents during the NBA Finals between the Knicks and Spurs sparked reactions from Ben Stiller and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani

The return of the NBA Finals to Madison Square Garden after twenty-seven years did not seem likely to create such a tense atmosphere outside New York’s historic arena.

Yet the feeling is that events went far beyond what anyone could have anticipated, particularly after the game, and that sentiment has been echoed by several influential voices.

One of them was actor and longtime New York Knicks fan Ben Stiller, who took to X to strongly condemn the behavior of some unruly Knicks supporters.

Being a Knicks fan does not in any way mean being disrespectful to Spurs fans. We get caught up in the emotion of the games, but we have to respect our fellow human beings…

Several hours later, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani echoed the actor’s message.

After calling the postgame acts of violence and attacks on law enforcement unacceptable and promising immediate action, the mayor referenced Stiller’s comments while also offering his prediction for the outcome of the NBA Finals.

I couldn’t agree more. We’ll win this series on the court (even if the refs refuse to call a flagrant on Wemby), not by targeting, harassing, or attacking Spurs fans.

The documented incidents did not involve only Texas fans. A group of individuals also obstructed a New York Police Department vehicle, with two people climbing onto the roof of the patrol car.

In the absence of the kind of organized supporter culture commonly seen in European sports, the sheer number of traveling fans often becomes a major factor in explaining the likelihood of tensions and confrontations.

New York Knicks fans, while overwhelmingly peaceful in the vast majority of cases, regularly travel in larger numbers than most fan bases, thanks to the franchise’s nationwide popularity. For that reason, with the series now guaranteed to return to San Antonio for Game 5 of the NBA Finals, the risk of further incidents remains a real concern.

As demonstrated during the first two games of the series, attendance at the Frost Bank Center was relatively balanced between the two fan bases. As a result, enhanced security measures will not be solely a concern for New York officials ahead of Game 4 of the NBA Finals.
