New York Knicks 2026 NBA Champions: “Sorry for the wait”

The New York Knicks are NBA champions for the first time since 1973. A victory over the Spurs in Game 5 sealed the title, with a sensational Jalen Brunson earning NBA Finals MVP honors

The wait is over. After more than half a century of hope, heartbreak and rebuilding, the New York Knicks are NBA champions once again. The franchise from the Big Apple captured the 2026 NBA Championship by defeating the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 of the Finals, bringing the Larry O’Brien Trophy back to New York for the first time since 1973.

Leading the Knicks to glory was a phenomenal Jalen Brunson, who scored 45 of New York’s 94 points. It was a superstar performance that also earned him the NBA Finals MVP award.

A dominant run to the NBA title

The Knicks’ championship was no fluke. The numbers tell the story of a truly remarkable postseason:

  • 16 wins and 3 losses
  • +283 point differential, the best in NBA playoff history
  • Every series-clinching victory came on the road

This was a team that built its journey on resilience and an ability to respond when adversity struck.

Comebacks became their trademark

Game 5 followed a familiar script that had played out throughout much of the series. As had happened multiple times against the Spurs, the Knicks found themselves trailing before turning the game around in the second half.

San Antonio repeatedly tested New York throughout the Finals, but every time Mike Brown’s team found a way to respond. Determination, toughness and composure proved to be the defining traits of this championship group.

Alongside Brunson, OG Anunoby and Karl-Anthony Towns also played pivotal roles throughout the series, delivering moments that will forever be remembered in New York sports history.

James Dolan to the fans: “Sorry for the wait”

Immediately after the championship was secured, Knicks owner James Dolan addressed the New York fans who had traveled to San Antonio to witness a historic night.

Hey New York! I’m sorry it took so long, but here we are. And hopefully it won’t take this long next time

James Dolan

A simple message that perfectly captured the frustration and anticipation built up over more than five decades without a title.

An NBA defined by parity

With the Knicks’ championship, the NBA has now crowned a different champion in eight consecutive seasons:

  • 2019 Raptors
  • 2020 Lakers
  • 2021 Bucks
  • 2022 Warriors
  • 2023 Nuggets
  • 2024 Celtics
  • 2025 Thunder
  • 2026 Knicks

A streak that highlights just how competitive and unpredictable the league has become.

New York can finally celebrate

On the other side remains the disappointment of the Spurs and Victor Wembanyama, who nevertheless completed an outstanding season. Costly mistakes late in Game 2 and Game 4 weighed heavily on the outcome of the series, which could easily have unfolded differently.

But these Finals seemed destined to become the stage for the Knicks.

After 53 years of waiting, New York can finally say the words generations of fans dreamed of hearing:

The New York Knicks are NBA champions.
