Wembanyama on the NBA Finals: “The biggest learning experience of my life”
The Spurs’ run to the NBA Finals ended against the Knicks, but the feeling is that this team is still evolving. Victor Wembanyama emphasized the value of the experience gained throughout the journey
The San Antonio Spurs came within reach of their dream, but their 2026 NBA Finals run ended with a 94-90 loss to the New York Knicks in Game 5. A difficult 4-1 series defeat, but one that still leaves a clear impression: this team arrived on this stage ahead of schedule.
Game 5 followed a script that had appeared several times throughout the series. The Spurs built a first-half lead, controlled the tempo for long stretches, and then suffered another fourth-quarter collapse. The Knicks were more composed in the biggest moments and capitalized on every mistake. At this level, that is often the difference.
Wembanyama reflects on the NBA Finals
Following the game, Victor Wembanyama did not shy away from discussing the Spurs’ journey. He spoke candidly about the team’s progress, avoiding excuses while emphasizing how much growth and learning came from this season and this deep playoff run.
This is the biggest learning experience of my life. It’s been an incredible year in terms of experience. I don’t think we could have learned and grown more in a single season and a single playoff run. It was full of lessons
Victor Wembanyama
Wembanyama also highlighted another key takeaway from the series:
The margin for error is incredibly small. We dominated large portions of the series, but every mistake we made was punished severely
Victor Wembanyama
He then wrapped up his NBA Finals media availability with a joke that perfectly reflected his personality:
Thank you, everybody. See you… never again

Spurs ahead of schedule
Despite the loss, there is a strong sense around the Spurs that this rebuilding project has accelerated faster than expected. The team reached a competitive level few anticipated this early, and its playoff run confirmed the growth that has taken place.
Head coach Mitch Johnson emphasized both Wembanyama’s development and his leadership throughout the postseason:
He’s grown tremendously. He handled every moment with the right balance of courage and respect, and he lifted his teammates along the way. It was special to watch and to be a part of

What comes next? A $251 million extension looms
The future remains wide open. The Spurs leave these Finals with valuable experience, greater self-awareness, and a roster that already looks highly competitive. Most importantly, they leave knowing their franchise cornerstone is already capable of performing on basketball’s biggest stage.
What frustrates me is knowing there are probably 100 games before I can get back to the Finals. … I’ll have to keep that feeling inside, slow down, be patient and do things the right way for 100 games
Victor Wembanyama
There is also a major contractual milestone on the horizon. Wembanyama will soon become eligible for a five-year contract extension worth more than $251 million.
Between a painful loss that delivered invaluable lessons and a future filled with enormous expectations and responsibilities, the Spurs leave these Finals believing that their real journey is only just beginning.
