Despite ending up in the Play-In Tournament, the Golden State Warriors have been eagerly awaiting the 2026 NBA Draft since January – the month marked by Jimmy Butler’s torn ACL, an injury that effectively extinguished much of the team’s championship hopes during another season led by Stephen Curry.
The franchise’s immediate future remains closely tied to its iconic superstar. The final years of Curry’s career must be devoted to chasing one last NBA championship and adding another chapter to his legendary résumé, without deviating from that mission.
The biggest storyline of the summer remains LeBron James’ decision. Salary-cap realities continue to make other destinations more likely, but speculation about the King finishing his career in San Francisco alongside his longtime rival has never fully disappeared.
As important as that situation may be, it does not alter the Warriors’ priorities heading into the 2026 NBA Draft: adding a rookie who is ready to contribute immediately and help the team compete next season.
With the 11th overall pick, the front office could have access to the ideal candidate: reigning NCAA champion Yaxel Lendeborg.
Why should the Warriors target Yaxel Lendeborg?
As with any 24-year-old prospect, it would be unrealistic to expect the same developmental upside associated with younger players. On the other hand, Yaxel Lendeborg is one of the prospects in the 2026 NBA Draft class most likely to make an immediate impact, both technically and physically, from day one in the league.
His reliability from three-point range would make him a valuable floor-spacing weapon alongside Stephen Curry, while his defensive instincts and quick hands would provide head coach Steve Kerr with important versatility, particularly during Jimmy Butler’s extended absence.
There is another key factor to consider: the experience accumulated over six years of college basketball, culminating in the achievements of 2026. This season, Lendeborg captured Big Ten MVP honors and led Michigan to a March Madness title, the culmination of a steady developmental journey despite the challenges he faced along the way.
The Warriors’ plan B: Trevon Brazile
That projection may seem bold, especially considering that recent mock drafts have not consistently placed him among first-round selections. However, if Yaxel Lendeborg comes off the board in the Top 10 – a scenario far from impossible – the alternative could still make plenty of sense.
Less impactful in half-court defensive situations but equally reliable from beyond the arc and perhaps even more explosive athletically, both in transition and on the glass, Trevon Brazile was one of the driving forces behind the Arkansas Razorbacks’ run to the Sweet 16.
