NBA GOAT: Jordan, LeBron and Rich Paul’s truth

The NBA GOAT debate has never had a definitive answer and continues to fuel comparisons between Michael Jordan and LeBron James. Recent comments from Rich Paul and Max Kellerman have reignited the conversation

The NBA GOAT debate has always been a sensitive topic, both for fans and for those around the game. The discussion that generates the most division today centers on two of the greatest players ever: LeBron James and Michael Jordan.

The former has just completed his 23rd NBA season and is evaluating whether to continue his extraordinary career. The latter was the defining basketball icon of the 1990s, leading the Chicago Bulls to six NBA championships.

On the Game Over podcast, LeBron James’ agent Rich Paul shared his thoughts on the GOAT conversation:

The way I think about longevity and the highest level of performance is how I think about the GOAT and the greatest player ever. To me, Michael is the GOAT, but LeBron is the greatest player of all time. In basketball, people try to stop time, and everybody does that with Mike. I say that as one of his biggest fans

The comparison between Jordan and James has existed since 2003, the year LeBron entered the NBA through the Draft. From a statistical standpoint, the Ohio native has surpassed several records held by the former Bulls superstar, while still trailing his longtime “rival” in championships and MVP awards.

According to Max Kellerman, the GOAT discussion could eventually include Victor Wembanyama, who has enjoyed a remarkable rise and a season filled with record-setting performances for the San Antonio Spurs.

Right now, he’s the player who could be closest to entering that conversation. People started realizing how great he was at the 2024 Olympics because before that they hadn’t fully understood it when he was drafted. Unlike LeBron, who was celebrated immediately by everyone, many people mainly focused on his height when he entered the NBA. He’s very young, takes care of himself the way LeBron does, and he’s in the right organization to develop. Nobody has a better chance than Victor to work his way into the conversation with James and Jordan

In the end, there is no definitive answer, and perhaps that is what makes the debate so fascinating. The GOAT debate will continue for years to come, fueled by numbers, emotions, and opinions that may never fully align.
