World Cup 2026: FIFA introduces NBA-style championship rings

For the first time in FIFA World Cup history, the 2026 champions will receive official championship rings, inspired by the long-standing traditions of the NBA, NFL, and NHL

FIFA is bringing one of American sports’ most iconic traditions to the world’s biggest football tournament. For the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, the governing body has announced the creation of the first official World Cup championship rings, modeled after those awarded to champions in the NBA, NFL, and NHL.

It’s a first for top-level international football and raises an interesting question: will this be a one-off tribute to a North American World Cup, or the beginning of a permanent tradition?

2,026 rings produced: only 30 for the World Champions

The total production number is symbolic. FIFA will manufacture 2,026 commemorative rings, matching the tournament year. Only 30 rings will be awarded to players from the World Cup-winning national team, while the remaining 1,996 will be made available to fans as official merchandise.

FIFA’s goal is to bring one of the most recognizable traditions in American sports into international football. Immediately after the final, the winning team’s captain and head coach will receive provisional versions of the ring before personalized final editions are produced.

What the World Cup rings will look like

Each ring will be individually numbered and customized for the championship-winning nation, complete with a certificate of authenticity and tailored sizing, making them true collector’s items. One side will feature the FIFA World Cup Trophy, while the other will display the winning nation’s emblem.

The rings will be crafted from 14- to 18-karat gold and adorned with diamonds and sapphires. The estimated value of each championship ring is approximately €130,000, placing them in the same luxury category as the famous NBA championship rings.

Fans will be able to buy one

Unlike American professional sports – where championship rings are typically reserved for players, coaches, and team staff – FIFA will also offer supporters the chance to own one. The remaining 1,996 rings will be sold to fans worldwide, although official pricing has not yet been announced.

The federation describes them as:

A unique piece of FIFA World Cup 2026 history

FIFA

A tradition inspired by, but new to, football

While the idea of championship rings isn’t entirely new to football, this marks the first time they will be officially produced by FIFA. After France won the 2018 FIFA World Cup, several players – including Paul Pogba and Antoine Griezmann – commissioned custom diamond rings privately to commemorate their triumph. However, those were personal creations rather than official awards. The 2026 edition will therefore mark the first FIFA official adoption of championship rings in World Cup history.

It is another sign of how the 2026 FIFA World Cup will embrace North American sports culture, blending football with traditions long associated with the biggest U.S. professional leagues. Whether championship rings become a permanent part of the tournament or remain unique to the first 48-team World Cup remains to be seen.
