Karl-Anthony Towns explains the Spurs’ NBA Finals collapse
Karl-Anthony Towns believes the difference in the NBA Finals came down to mentality. According to the Knicks center, the Spurs stopped playing to win and started playing not to lose
Led by Victor Wembanyama, the San Antonio Spurs exceeded every expectation this season, dominating the Western Conference and reaching the NBA Finals with one of the youngest rosters in the league. But once they arrived on basketball’s biggest stage, something changed.
According to Karl-Anthony Towns, who helped lead the New York Knicks to the NBA championship, the deciding factor had little to do with talent and everything to do with mentality.
Karl-Anthony Towns: “The Spurs were playing not to lose”
Speaking to reporters, Towns reflected on the Finals and explained why San Antonio repeatedly let leads slip away at the most critical moments.
I think sometimes, when you’re a young team, you step on the floor trying not to lose the game. We were playing to win it. That’s what made us so aggressive, while they were simply trying to protect their lead

For the Knicks’ big man, the contrast was primarily psychological. New York attacked every possession with the intent of closing out the series, while San Antonio became increasingly conservative whenever the pressure intensified.
Talent alone isn’t enough: experience still matters
On paper, the Spurs had everything needed to compete for a championship. A young, deep roster led by an exceptional Victor Wembanyama transformed a rebuilding team into a legitimate title contender in just one season.
However, the NBA Finals present an entirely different challenge. Every mistake carries greater consequences, every possession can swing a game, and experience often becomes the deciding factor.
According to Towns, that is exactly what caused the Spurs’ downfall – not a lack of talent, but their mindset and ability to handle the pressure of the biggest stage.
