Kawhi Leonard investigation could stretch into 2027

This NBA offseason has been dominated by blockbuster signings, trades, and roster moves, but one story continues to unfold behind the scenes – and it could have major consequences for the Los Angeles Clippers. The NBA’s investigation into allegations that the franchise attempted to circumvent the salary cap in connection with Kawhi Leonard remains ongoing and, according to the latest reports, may not be resolved before 2027.

The league is investigating the alleged connection between Clippers owner Steve Ballmer and a sponsorship agreement involving Leonard through Aspiration, a company that later became the subject of a fraud case. Investigators are examining whether that agreement may have been used to provide Leonard with compensation outside the team’s official salary cap.

The NBA investigation could last much longer

Until a few weeks ago, many believed the NBA would resolve the matter before the start of the season. That timeline, however, may change dramatically. According to ESPN, much depends on whether the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) chooses to challenge the league’s conclusions.

According to the same ESPN report, sources close to the players’ union said the NBPA is prepared to seek arbitration if the NBA attempts to punish the Clippers without what it considers sufficiently strong evidence.

What are the Clippers risking?

To oversee the case, the NBA has retained the law firm Wachtell Lipton, the same firm that previously handled high-profile matters involving former team owners Donald Sterling and Robert Sarver.

At this stage, however, investigators have reportedly not uncovered conclusive evidence proving that the Clippers deliberately used Aspiration to channel undisclosed payments to Leonard outside the league’s salary cap rules.

If the league ultimately determines that the rules were violated, however, the consequences could be severe, including fines, suspensions, and even the loss of NBA Draft picks.

The organization’s stance has remained unchanged from the very beginning. The Clippers deny any wrongdoing and maintain that they were themselves victims of the fraud involving Aspiration.

According to a team source cited by ESPN, the franchise is prepared to use every legal avenue available to defend its position.

Beyond the potential disciplinary consequences, the investigation has also created uncertainty regarding Kawhi Leonard’s future. According to the report, a potential offseason trade involving Leonard was delayed because of the unresolved investigation.

The Clippers remain confident that the inquiry will ultimately clear the organization of any wrongdoing. However, if the process truly extends into next year, the case will continue to cast a shadow over the franchise while fueling ongoing speculation and debate.

One thing, however, has become increasingly clear: the NBA has no intention of rushing to a decision. Before issuing any ruling, the league wants to ensure it has sufficient evidence to support any potential disciplinary action.
