The 2026-27 NBA season is starting to reveal the first must-see dates on the calendar. And fans won’t have to wait long for the action: the new season will officially tip off on Tuesday, October 20, with an Opening Night packed with storylines, while Christmas Day 2026 will feature one of the most anticipated games of the year, with LeBron James facing the Los Angeles Lakers for the first time.
A total of nine games will be nationally televised during the first four days of the regular season, across NBC/Peacock, ESPN and Prime Video. It’s an exciting first look ahead of the release of the full 2026-27 NBA regular-season schedule.
NBA Opening Night: LeBron makes his debut against the Knicks
The season will officially tip off on October 20 with three games.
The Boston Celtics will visit the Detroit Pistons to open the new campaign, in a matchup featuring the two best teams in the Eastern Conference during the 2025-26 regular season.
All eyes will then turn to Madison Square Garden, where the reigning NBA champion New York Knicks will begin their title defense by hosting the new-look Philadelphia 76ers led by LeBron James and Jaylen Brown.
It will immediately be a huge debut for LeBron: after leaving the Lakers and choosing Philadelphia, James will make his Sixers debut on the home court of the defending NBA champions.
Closing out the first night of the new season will be the Oklahoma City Thunder, who will visit the San Antonio Spurs. There will be no shortage of storylines here either, as the matchup will be a rematch of the 2026 Western Conference Finals.
From Giannis to LaMelo: the most anticipated debuts
The action will continue over the following days, with ESPN opening its NBA coverage with back-to-back doubleheaders on Wednesday, October 21, and Thursday, October 22.
October 21 will feature the highly anticipated debuts of Giannis Antetokounmpo with the Miami Heat and LaMelo Ball with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Twenty-four hours later, it will be time for LeBron James and Jaylen Brown to make their home debuts with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Starting October 23, Prime Video will also join the action with its Friday night doubleheaders. The opening slate already promises plenty of intrigue: the Celtics and Knicks will renew their rivalry in Boston, while Kevin Durant will return to Texas with the Houston Rockets to face the San Antonio Spurs at the Moody Center in Austin.
NBA Christmas Day 2026: LeBron faces the Lakers
If Opening Night promises fireworks, NBA Christmas Day 2026 certainly won’t disappoint. For the 19th consecutive year, the league will feature five games on Christmas Day, all broadcast on ABC and ESPN.
The schedule will open with the San Antonio Spurs taking on the New York Knicks, marking the first meeting between the two teams since the 2026 NBA Finals, won by New York.
Next up will be Miami Heat vs. Boston Celtics, before arguably the most anticipated matchup of the day: Philadelphia 76ers vs. Los Angeles Lakers.
It will mark LeBron James’ first return to Los Angeles as an opponent of the Lakers. After spending years in purple and gold, the four-time MVP will return to the court he called home for so long, this time wearing a Sixers jersey. It’s a matchup destined to take center stage on Christmas Day.
The schedule will continue with Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Minnesota Timberwolves, before Denver Nuggets and Golden State Warriors close out the Christmas Day slate.
This first glimpse at the schedule is already enough to raise expectations. Between new Big Threes, highly anticipated debuts, rematches and major returns, the 2026-27 NBA season is set to hit the ground running.
