Simone Fontecchio dreams big with Miami and can’t wait to play alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo, one of the reasons that convinced him to stay with the Heat and truly chase an NBA championship.

On the other side of the country, meanwhile, the summer brings terrible news to Portland: Shaedon Sharpe tore the meniscus in his right knee and will be sidelined for around six months, seriously putting much of his upcoming season at risk.

Sharpe tears his meniscus: return not expected until 2027

For Shaedon Sharpe, the timing could not have been worse. The 23-year-old is coming off the best season of his career, averaging 20.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists, and was about to begin the first year of the four-year, $90 million extension he signed with Portland.

The meniscus injury occurred during an individual workout, and Sharpe is now expected to undergo surgery. The recovery timeline is around six months, making it difficult to see him back on the court before late February or early March. In other words, Portland could be forced to play almost the entire Regular Season without one of its top scorers.

Fontecchio: “Miami has NBA title aspirations”

In Miami, the Giannis Antetokounmpo effect appears to have been felt even before the opening tip. Simone Fontecchio chose to remain with the Heat on a one-year, $2.6 million deal and, speaking with La Gazzetta dello Sport, explained how the Greek star’s arrival made the possibility of continuing his Florida adventure even more appealing.

My intention was to stay in the NBA, preferably in Miami. The organization’s intentions were clear from the beginning when they made an important move to acquire a Hall of Famer like Antetokounmpo. I saw an opportunity to play for a team that truly has championship aspirations

For Fontecchio, the fit is fairly easy to envision. Giannis constantly creates advantages by attacking the rim and forces defenses to collapse: for a shooter capable of taking advantage of kick-outs, that means plenty of opportunities to knock down open shots.

Miami, meanwhile, continues to have one of the most intriguing rosters in the East after a summer in which it also added Klay Thompson.

Kuminga remains a name to keep an eye on

Among the names that may not be done packing their bags is Jonathan Kuminga. Following his move to Atlanta, his name continues to circulate in trade rumors, with the Lakers and Timberwolves emerging in particular over the past few weeks.

Los Angeles, at least on paper, would make plenty of sense. Athleticism, physicality and wing presence are all things the Lakers could use, but for now, we are still in the realm of possibilities: there are no reports of particularly advanced negotiations, and there is still a big difference between simple interest and an actual trade.

In short, Kuminga remains one of those names to keep an eye on as we get closer to training camp.
