Jokic, $360 million to finish his career with the Nuggets
The Nuggets’ Media Day sent a clear message: Jokic doesn’t seem to have any doubts about his future. On the horizon is a contract extension worth around $360 million and a desire to stay in Denver for the rest of his career
Nikola Jokic doesn’t seem to have any intention of leaving the Denver Nuggets, quite the opposite. The extension with the Nuggets won’t come immediately, but only because waiting a few more months could allow him to sign an even richer contract. At Media Day, the Serbian once again confirmed his plans for the future, while adding a joke in classic Jokic fashion.
I’ll sign next year. If they want me

It’s difficult to imagine a different scenario. Jokic is already eligible for a four-year extension worth around $280 million, but by waiting until next summer, he could reach a five-year deal worth around $350-360 million. Such an agreement would push him past $700 million earned through NBA contracts alone over the course of his career.
So the decision is primarily an economic one, although naturally some in Denver have started to worry at the possibility of Jokic reaching next summer without an extension. The three-time MVP, however, tried to reassure everyone.
I’ve been more than clear about this. I hope they trust me

Jokic wants to follow Curry’s path
For Jokic, staying with the Nuggets isn’t just about money. Denver is the only NBA team he has ever known: they selected him in the second round in 2014, watched him develop into an MVP and, in 2023, won the first championship in franchise history with him.
And the model pointed to by the Serbian is Stephen Curry, who has just extended his relationship with Golden State once again and aims to finish his career with the only franchise he has ever played for.
I was here when we were more or less a normal team, then we won a championship and even today we have the opportunity to compete at a high level and try to win another one. For me, it’s about legacy. You want to become a legend and be remembered: I think that’s how you do it

There doesn’t seem to be any particular anxiety from the Nuggets’ front office either. Ben Tenzer reiterated that he has no concerns about Jokic’s future, not even in the event of a difficult start to the team’s season.
