Giannis Antetokounmpo, a new life with the Heat: “I’m here to leave my mark”
A new city and a completely different NBA life for Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Greek star is enjoying the Heat’s pace and immediately putting the biggest goal on the table: the NBA title
Thirteen seasons with the same team is a long time, enough to make even something as simple as taking a different route to practice feel strange. Giannis Antetokounmpo is discovering all of this during his first few weeks in Miami, with new teammates, a new locker room and completely different schemes from those that accompanied him throughout his career in Milwaukee.
It’s a situation that inevitably takes him outside his comfort zone, but one that seems to suit him quite well.
It’s still strange. New faces, new teammates, new lockers, new ideas, new fans, a new city and even a new route to practice. But I’m in a great place
Giannis Antetokounmpo
The first few weeks spent scrimmaging and working out have primarily helped him get accustomed to the famous Heat Culture, an environment in which Giannis seems to have immediately recognized himself.
It’s a culture that fits my personality. I don’t have to take shortcuts and I’m excited about it. I see the same energy from the coaching staff and my teammates, and that gets me even more fired up

After two MVP awards, the 2021 championship and virtually an entire career built in Milwaukee, starting almost from scratch won’t be easy. Antetokounmpo, however, sees the uncertainty itself as one of the most exciting parts of his new adventure.
I know I play at my best when I’m in uncomfortable situations. Everything is new here: I’m learning the defense, the offense, I have to find my place in the locker room and figure out how to play with guys I’ve never played with before. It’s exciting. Whether it goes well or badly, it’s going to happen through work. And the goal is to win the championship

Giannis runs with the new Heat
One of the biggest changes Giannis has noticed is Miami’s style of play. The Heat are coming off a season in which they finished first in the NBA in pace, and the idea is to keep running, using Antetokounmpo as another weapon in transition.
A philosophy the Greek star has already begun to experience in practice.
I like it because we move and run, so we have space to get to our spots and create open shots. The other day we were playing a scrimmage and I was actually the last guy back in transition: that’s something new for me

With Bam Adebayo alongside him and shooters like Klay Thompson and Tim Hardaway Jr. ready to space the floor, one of the biggest questions will be how Miami can maximize Giannis without losing the pace that defined its offense.
Antetokounmpo, at least on paper, has already done the math.
We were creating so many easy shots. We can get to 110 or 120 points every night, and that always gives you a chance to win. And then we’ll defend

In Milwaukee, Giannis practically knew everything by heart; in Miami, he still has almost everything to discover. And perhaps that’s exactly what intrigues him most: stepping outside his comfort zone, challenging himself again and trying to build something new. With one thing that hasn’t changed: making it all the way to the end.
