J.R. Smith arrested in Texas on assault charge
Former NBA player J.R. Smith was arrested in Texas following a police stop: authorities found an active warrant for an assault charge related to family violence
J.R. Smith was arrested in Texas on a charge of assault causing bodily injury in connection with family violence. According to a report by TMZ, the former NBA player was stopped Monday after an automated license plate reader alerted police to an active arrest warrant in his name.
Officers then stopped the car Smith was driving and took him into custody. His brother was also with him and was allowed to take possession of the vehicle. The former player was later taken to the Hunt County Detention Center and, according to county records cited by TMZ, no bond had been set at the time the report was published.
This is not the first legal issue involving Smith: in the past, he spent 24 days in jail after pleading guilty to reckless driving in connection with a 2007 crash in which a passenger traveling with him was killed.
