Kessler is eager: “I want to play,” but the Lakers are holding him back

After spending practically all of last season sidelined, Walker Kessler is desperate to play. The Lakers’ new center reassures everyone, but Redick prefers to take things slowly

After spending practically all of last season sidelined, Walker Kessler cannot wait to get back on the court. The Los Angeles Lakers’ new center, who arrived from the Utah Jazz this summer, still has to wait a little longer before making his debut for JJ Redick’s team.

This time, the issue is a finger injury suffered during the opening days of training camp. Nothing particularly concerning, at least according to the player, but enough to convince the Lakers’ staff not to take any risks during the Preseason.

After the latest practice, which he fully participated in, Kessler explained the situation:

I just took a little knock to my finger. It’s mostly a precautionary thing, especially because we’re still in Preseason. I’m fine now, I went through the full practice today and I feel great

The center, however, did not hide his impatience. He played just five games during the 2025/26 season because of a shoulder injury, and the idea of having to wait even longer before returning to the court is not exactly appealing.

If I had played last season, it would be a little different. But since I basically didn’t play, I’m dying to get back out there. I’m ready, but I trust the medical staff, the coaches and the front office

When will Walker Kessler return?

For now, there is still no firm date. JJ Redick confirmed that Kessler has returned to full practice, but his availability for the next Preseason game against the Golden State Warriors is still being evaluated.

The Lakers invested heavily to bring him to Los Angeles through a sign-and-trade with Utah, and they prefer to manage his recovery carefully.

After spending nearly an entire year watching his teammates from the bench, it is understandable that Kessler wants to get back on the court as soon as possible. The Lakers, however, have no intention of rushing him back for a Preseason game. And as eager as the center may be, that is probably the most sensible choice.
